Almost everyone watching this webinar today knows someone near and dear to them who has a diabetes diagnosis. Think of how their lifestyle varies from yours and others who do not have the disease. This is a life-changing diagnosis and most people tend to struggle with managing their blood glucose levels and suffer from negative outcomes related to that. As we age our bodies also age. The pancreas is the organ responsible for making insulin and sending it out to the body when it is identified that glucose levels are rising. If the pancreas is aging and doesn’t always react appropriately, we will have too much glucose in our blood. Some people are born without the ability to make insulin which is considered Type I diabetes and is not something that can be managed through dietary control or oral medications. These people will require the use of insulin injections to maintain a comfortable life. This program was developed to assist you, the direct care staff in managing your residents with a diabetes diagnosis.

Having the skills to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) is the key to independence. The Direct Care Staff's goal is to determine just how much help a resident needs to perform these activities. Some people may only need encouragement; others may need help with set up; some need to work together with staff.

With the increasing rate of obesity, it is important to maintain the dignity of the resident. Obesity has increased from 14.4% to 30.9% from 1976 to 2000. Studies show that bariatric disease and its impact on one’s mobility and quality of life can cause bias, discrimination and social stigmas. There is clear, consistent evidence that individuals with obesity experience discrimination in family, social, education, and employment settings. Even the most compassionate caregiver may be reluctant to provide adequate care because of the threat of caregiver injury. The fear of injury is realistic and combined with the failure to provide satisfactory care to a complex resident, further the perpetuation of discrimination toward the obese resident.

Our centers are full of frail, elderly residents who are here because they are no longer able to care for themselves. In the event of an emergency, these residents depend on you and your co-workers for protection.
