HIPAA: Acronym that stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a US law designed to provide privacy standards to protect patients' medical records and other health information provided to health plans, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers.
The goals of HIPAA are to protect health insurance coverage for workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs (Portability) and to protect health data integrity, confidentiality, and availability (Accountability).
This educational session was developed to provide you, the health care provider, with the information needed to maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations while caring for your residents. 0.5 CEUs will be provided to licensed nurses through the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) at the completion of this session.

Andrea DeLand is a Risk Manager for HealthCap. She graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Health Studies and from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where she was recognized for her success in the studies of medical malpractice, insurance law, and equities/remedies.
Ms. DeLand is committed to client advocacy and has extensive expertise in civil, criminal, and regulatory defense matters as they relate to Senior Living providers and professionals. Her diverse legal and professional healthcare experience is evidenced, in part, by her representation of healthcare professionals and organizations with the following matters: HealthCare Professional Licensure; Facility Licensure; Facility/Provider Medicare & Medicaid Initial Certification Procedure; Appeal of State and Federal Survey Agency (SA) Findings & Enforcement Remedies; Development and routine revision of substantive legal/regulatory University-level curricula, which serve as pre-conditions to apply for the taking of the national licensure examination for Nursing Home Administrators (LNHA); United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) financing and re-financing issues; Development, review and revision of corporate compliance programs to ensure consistency with current guidance and regulation; Representing clients in probate court proceedings; Defending allegations of general negligence and medical malpractice in civil litigation; Office of Inspector General (OIG), List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE) LEIE related issues; Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance related issues; Office of Inspector General (OIG), Self-Disclosure Protocol (SDP) related issues.
Prior to her legal career, Ms. DeLand was dedicated to serving the Senior Living provider community. She has spent a significant portion of her life in nursing homes. Ms. DeLand has served in various capacities for Senior Living providers, including volunteering with resident activities and events; serving as a receptionist during undergraduate; planning resident and staff appreciation activities; training all departments on new and/or revised policies and procedures; and serving as an assistant administrator.
The breadth of Ms. DeLand’s experience in post-acute care has earned her respect and recognition, which is evidenced by her practical approach to addressing multi-faceted operational and regulatory compliance-related issues within a complex and heavily regulated healthcare setting.
