This program is designed to improve infection control in long-term care facilities by requiring the use of gowns and gloves during high-contact activities, particularly for residents at risk of colonization by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). This approach expands on standard precautions, addressing everyday care scenarios that pose a risk of MDRO transmission, while aiming to balance infection prevention with maintaining residents' quality of life. By implementing Enhanced Barrier Precautions, facilities can reduce the spread of MDROs without relying on isolating residents, ensuring safer care environments through proper training, planning, and adherence to updated guidelines from the CDC and CMS.
Objectives
• Identify the importance of ensuring effective implementation of Enhanced Barrier Precautions
• Discuss the CDC guidelines/recommendations
• Review CMS regulation 880 related to Enhanced Barrier Precautions
• Define an MDRO
• Identify changes in PPE use recommendations
Attendees will be awarded 1.0 ANCC contact hours for completing the course/webinar.
