Constipation occurs when bowel movements become less frequent, and stools become difficult to pass. It happens most often due to changes in diet or routine, or due to inadequate intake of fiber. Other causes of constipation include not eating enough fiber, not drinking enough water, lack of exercise (immobility), a change in normal routine, stress and resisting the urge to have a bowel movement. All these causes could have an impact on your residents. This program was developed to assist you in identifying residents at risk of constipation and assist in preventing it.

- Identify the symptoms of impaction
