Restorative Nursing - Mobility, Ambulation and Wrap Up

Maintaining and enhancing a resident’s mobility and ability to ambulate is a crucial component of fall prevention.  Mobility, including ambulation, contributes significantly to the overall social and physical well-being of residents and also reduces the need for assistive devices, including restraints. A Restorative Mobility program is an interdisciplinary process involving nursing, physical therapy and the physician. For the program to be successful, the resident should help establish priorities and goals they want to achieve.  Mobility includes bed mobility, changing positions and transferring from one surface to another and ambulation.  The ultimate goal is to help the resident achieve a level of independence whereby the resident can change positions when desired.  As the resident’s mobility increases so do opportunities for socialization. This program was developed to assist you the caregiver in providing quality care to your residents with improving their overall outcomes and independence.

Objectives:

  • Develop an ambulation program
  • Discuss the need for a restorative program
  • Select restorative program goals
