Agenda

  1. The ABCs of RSV
  2. Diagnosis of RSV
  3. Preventative Strategies to Reduce Risk of Infection and Co-Infection
  4. Emerging Vaccination Options for Older Adults

Learning Objectives

  • Identify gaps in patient and provider knowledge and perceptions of RSV, including symptoms, routes of transmission, seasonality, and high-risk groups
  • Develop interprofessional strategies for overcoming barriers to RSV testing and diagnosis
  • Apply evidence-based strategies to communicate with patients and caregivers about current and emerging prevention strategies for RSV, with a focus on vaccines in development

Activity Overview

Intended Audience: Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, case managers, and other providers specializing in geriatrics, emergency medicine, pulmonology, primary care, allergy, or immunology and caring for people at long-term care facilities

Although respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is mostly known for its effects on infants, it can also lead to severe illness in older adults.

This guide provides health care professionals who care for older adults, such as residents of long-term care facilities, with resources to educate patients about RSV and strategies to prevent it, including vaccines under development. Use the guide with patients individually or in group settings to build a foundation for education and a forum for patients to ask questions and voice concerns.

Included in this guide:

  • Patient-friendly slide deck on RSV symptoms, risk factors for severe disease, testing, prevention strategies, and vaccines under development
  • Tips for engaging patients in collaborative learning so they become active participants in their own care
  • Resources to support education and shared decision-making
This activity is delivered in partnership with The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (AMDA).
